Mozco: The Best Icon Designer Ever

In the good old days before MacOS 8, I enjoyed designing icon.

At that period of time, icons were limited to 32×32 pixels, 256 colors and we only have ResEdit as our tool; it’s quite a charming but challenging job to design icon under that circumstance. Since I could only make unremarkable icons, I thought that’s what can be achieved with these restrictions.

However, I found some brilliant icons from the CD-ROM of Macworld Taiwan magazine about 1998. Those icons really amaze me: they are super realistic and obviously not made by scaling down photos (otherwise, you’ll get some dithering pixel). Who can draw like this?

Later, that guy was introduced in the magazine. His name is Igarashi Susumu; Mozco is his nickname. He has no art background at all and worked in a law office or somewhere has nothing to do with icon designing. In spite of this, he totally surpassed all icon artists at the same time and won the Kaleidoscope scheme design prize. The characteristics of his icons are vivid light and shadow, glaring color, and black border on the boundary.

His website no longer work. However, you could go to archive.org and see what’s included. There were his tips and tricks on creating icon––yup, you’re right: he always draws the motif pixel by pixel!

I’ve sent him several emails to show my esteem. (His icons are emailware––that means if you like them, send the author email). However, I never got his word, and his website has stop updating for a long time. I checked his website regularly until two years ago I found his site become the empty directory index page of apache––that really made me sad.

I don’t know what happened to Mr. Mozco. I really want to know because he is my idol. He just disappeared legendary. What a pity! I’ve already searched all the keywords I could imagine and still got nothing. If someone could investigate on this, I’ll be very grateful.

JapanToolsOfficeKitchenAnimalsDaily ItemsSymbolic Object
